People in the spotlight
For over 500 years, inquisitive minds from different parts of the world have studied at the University of Freiburg. Their names will forever remain associated with their alma mater. Several of them are now part of the history of this country as a result of their great academic achievements.
Notable alumni include Ulrich Zasius (1461-1535), the founder of German legal practices; Gregor Reisch (1467-1525), the advisor to Emperor Maximilian and author of the “Margarita philosophica”; Karl von Rotteck (1775-1840), Member of Parliament and Rektor of the University of Freiburg; and the two world renown philosophers Edmund Husserl (1899-1992) and Martin Heidegger (1889-1976).
The Freiburg University can also look back on a long list of Nobel Prize winners, including Hans Spemann (1869-1941), Nobel Prize for Medicine, Hermann Staudinger (1881-1965), Nobel Prize for Chemistry, and Friedrich August von Hayek (1899-1992), Nobel Prize for economics.
Many of our graduates can currently be found in the public spotlight. Some have even written or spoken with us about their studies in Freiburg.
