Program Structure, Content and Requirements

Beginning and Length of the Program

The Double-Major Bachelor of Arts + Teaching Option is designed as a three-year, full-time course of study. It begins every winter semester in October and spans six semesters. Upon completion of this degree, students may enter the two-year Master of Education to complete their teacher training. More information on the application process and deadline can be found here.


The major in English includes the following modules:

  • Foundations of Linguistics
  • Foundations of Literary Studies
  • Foundations of Cultural Studies
  • Advanced Linguistics
  • Advanced Literary Studies
  • Advanced Cultural Studies
  • One of the following:
    • Specialization in Linguistics
    • Specialization in Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Foundations of Grammar and Writing
  • Basic Oral Language Practice
  • Advanced Language Practice

The Teaching Option includes the following modules:

  • Education Theory
  • English Didactic Theory (Fachdidaktik)
  • Didactic Theory for second major

ECTS Credits

Credit points in this program are allocated based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). ECTS was introduced Europe-wide in order to offer compatibility and mobility between academic programs at different institutes of higher education across the continent.

In order to graduate from this B.A. program, 75 ECTS credits must be accumulated in English, another 75 ECTS credits in the second subject, plus 20 ECTS credits for the teaching option.

General Education Option (Ergänzungsbereich)

If students wish to do a double major but are not interested in the Teaching Option, they may fulfill the general education requirements instead. This includes a minimum of 8 ECTS credits from professional skills (BOK) courses offered at the Center for Soft Skills (ZfS), and the rest (12–22 ECTS credits) from other faculties or departments.
