Current changes in the English modals
Previous research has identified the English modals as a category of rapid change in Present Day WRITTEN English. Using newly available opportunities to study ongoing change in SPOKEN English on the basis of corpora, the thesis will investigate the question of whether a comparable dynamic is evident in spoken English, too.
