Sören Urbansky studied Russian and Chinese history in Berkeley, Kasan, Harbin, Beijing and Frankfurt/Oder where he earned a Diploma in Social and Cultural Studies. He teaches East Asian History at the University of Freiburg and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Heidelberg within the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. His main research interests include the history of modern China, of Russia and the Soviet Union, and the history of borders.
