Imke von Helden completed her Scandinavian and English studies at Albert-Ludwigs-University (Freiburg) and University of Ulster (Coleraine) in 2006 with her thesis “Hei til EU. Die Rolle der EU-Debatte im norwegischen Wahlkampf 2001“. After teaching at language schools in Germany and Switzerland, she is now a research assistant in the project History in Popular Cultures at Freiburg University. Her current research focuses on identity and nation in heavy metal as well as local movements in the age of globalisation. Furthermore, she is a member of the steering committee organising conferences for Heavy Fundametalisms.

In the research group, she analyses the reception of national symbols and history in extreme metal.
