The Chair of „Environmental Governance“ at the Institute of Environmental Social Sciences and Geography focusses in teaching and research on the interplay of coordination by market, state and civil society (“governance”). Thematically, we mainly deal with the challenge of how to coordinate and govern the protection and wise use of natural resources for sustainable development. Building on a broad understanding of governance, our research is concentrated on questions of the effective facilitation and institutionalization of societal negotiation processes between different stakeholders and at different levels (from the local, the regional, the national to the global level). Our students acquire leadership skills in questions of sustainable development, which makes them versatile experts in the conceptualization, realization and evaluation of governance processes.
