My research is concerned with Ionic Liquids, which are generally defined as salts with melting points below 100°C. Many Ionic Liquids consist of organic cations and halometallate anions. The lowest melting points can usually be achieved with univalent anions, whereas higher melting points are obtained for bivalent ones. A system showing an interesting phase behavior is [HMIM]Br\SnBr4. By varying the molar ratio of the two components, the melting points and formation of different anionic complexes can be manipulated in a wide range. Quantum Chemical Calculations are employed to further understand the observed behavior of these substances.

In cooperation with the group of Prof. Dr. Sebastian Hasenstab-Riedel (TU Berlin) I also study the formation and properties of novel interhalogenide anions within Ionic Liquids. Both their physical and electrochemical properties are unusual and an interesting subject of investigation.
